Now that election season has come to an end, and our new president has been inaugurated, all eyes shift to the importance of pets as Joe Biden’s lovely furry family members enter the white house.
President Biden’s two dogs, Champ and Major, have become the first animals in the white house since the Obama administration. Interestingly enough, Donald Trump was the first president in well over a century that did not have a pet in the Oval Office.
Major and Champ, who are both German shepherds, are 2 and 12 years old. President Biden adopted Major in 2018 from a humane society, making this beauty the first rescue dog to ever live in the White House. As many should, we believe this is a very significant and interesting part of America’s history.
Ever since Theodore Roosevelt’s animals have been in the public eye, pets have been the perfect example of companionship, and have a lot to say about a person in power’s political image. To some, the lack of having animals in the White House, or in high levels of government throughout the world, is the reason behind one’s lack of charisma and personal warmth.
President Biden’s dogs will have to fill the large shoes that Sunny, Barack Obama’s Portuguese water dog, has previously made. Those that were in the White House during Obama’s presidency said that Sunny was full of energy and so affectionate towards all that got the chance to see her. Sunny, and their newly gifted dog Bo, were also in attendance at the State Dinner, welcoming French President Francois Hollande in 2014.
