Popular Dog Food Recalled Due To Possible Elevated Levels Of Beef Thyroid Hormone

Wellness, a company that manufactures different varieties of dog food, has issued a voluntary recall for one of its products as a result of possible elevated levels of the beef thyroid hormone.

These hormones are primarily found in thyroid glands and gullets, both of which have been long banned in human foods by the USDA. Although gullets can be used in pet foods, they must have all thyroid glands fully removed first in order to prevent elevated amounts of the hormone.

The affected food is Wellness 95% Beef Topper for Dogs in 13.2 oz cans. The best by dates of the cans to look out for are 02 FEB 19, 29 AUG 19 and 30 AUG 19, and you can find these dates stamped on the base of each can.

Although no reports have been received by Wellness or their department for Consumer Affairs of any illness, this recall is a largely precautionary step. In addition, due to the fact that the food is meant to be provided as supplemental or intermittent foods, it is unlikely that any dogs will experience adverse reactions.

Symptoms that may appear in your pup if they have consumed elevated beef thyroid hormones include sudden weight loss, excessive thirst and urination, an increased heart rate, and restlessness. Continual exposure to these hormones can eventually lead to vomiting, diarrhea, or breathing issues. Luckily, these symptoms typically reverse on their own or with minimal medical help once consumption of affected foods cease.
