How To Prevent Back Problems In Dachshunds

It’s often been said that dachshunds are half a dog high and one and a half dogs long.

While they are arguably some of the cutest dogs there are, their long backs also mean they are predisposed to back problems.

Many dachshund people are aware that this can be an issue that develops as dachshunds age, but did you know dachshunds can develop back problems or get back injuries at any age?

The trick is to be proactive in preventing these issues before they start.

  1. No jumping. Jumping up on people, down from furniture, or even going down human-sized steps can cause major back problems for dachshunds. Teach your dachshund not to jump and if your doxie is allowed on the furniture, consider getting them a ramp to use. Jumping up and down can both be very bad for dachshunds, but jumping down is especially hard on their little bodies. Imagine standing on your couch and jumping down from it every time you get up. Now imagine if you were as small and long as a dachshund. Sofas, beds, and cars are all big jumps for a dachshund and are one of the leading causes of back injuries in dachshunds. Help eliminate this risk and you will reduce the likelihood of a back injury.
  2. Watch their weight. It can be easy for dachshunds to get a little overweight, being as small as they are but their long backs make it even more important to keep the extra pounds off. Excess weight puts extra strain on their already delicate backs and can cause major issues. If you are having a hard time not giving your doxie treats, opt for healthier options like raw carrots.
  3. Get exercise. The best way to strengthen your dachshund’s back is with regular exercise. Focus on low-impact, consistent exercise like going for walks or swimming. Sticking with an exercise regimen that is easy on their body will help them build muscle and stay strong without adding extra stress to their back.
  4. Use a supplement. In addition to a good diet (fed in moderation), a great way to prevent back injuries is by giving your dachshund a good joint supplement. Go for something US-made with natural & organic ingredients that pack a strong punch to give their joints the support they need. Most vets recommend starting a joint supplement when your dachshund is fully grown.

While it may not be possible to prevent all back problems or injuries, there are definitely things we can do for our dachshunds as their guardians to reduce the likelihood of these problems. Create a safe environment and healthy habits early on and when in doubt, consult with your veterinarian. I hope these tips help you!
