While the popular expression "birds of a feather flock together" suggests that animals of different species don't mix well, that is not necessarily the case in many instances. Whether on the internet or in our neighborhood, we have all seen two different species of pets develop true friendships.
Dogs are often called "man's best friend", but they don't have trouble making other friends. There have been cases where female dogs have played the role of de facto moms to other species' offspring.
A German Shepherd named Xena recently formed a bond with an unlikely companion, a crow. The crow named Pepe fell off a tree when he was a little chick, and his mother never came for him. Xena's mom, Joanna, took Pepe in to care for him, and it wasn't long before the crow and dog started enjoying each other's company.
Joanna didn't want to enslave Pepe, so she taught him how to fly in hopes he could return to the wild one day. She also made sure Pepe could fend for himself before setting him free.
However, despite rejoining his crow friends in the wild, Pepe continues to stop by occasionally to check up on his dog friend, Xena, and ensure everything is okay.
