People mostly see relationships like this one as just business. But they’re way more than just business.
Ohio Police Officer Hickey recently retired, and when he retired, he had high hopes of buying his K-9 partner from the force so they could spend the remainder of their days together. For Officer Hickey, his dog Ajax is not just a co-worker or “just a dog” – he is family! So when he offered $3,500 to the force to buy Ajax, he was surprised when he was told Ajax would be going to auction and he could bid on him there.
“To me, it’s like raising a child,” he told NBC. “You get bonded just from the basic training. You watch his breathing, his tail movements.”
“K-9s who are retired due to age or infirmity are offered to their former partners, by law, for $1.00,” the Marietta, OH, Facebook page explained in a statement. “This situation, however, is quite different in that while Officer Hickey has earned his retirement, his partner Ajax has several working years left before he is ready to join the ranks of the retirees, this according to the master trainer that Officer Hickey and others recommended to me.”
When the internet got word of Officer Hickey’s situation, the story went viral and his gofundme account received over $69,000 in donations so he could win Ajax back in auction. Then, in a strange twist, the force indicated there were already arrangements being made for Officer Hickey to be able to keep Ajax.
Long story short, Ajax is now happy at home with retired Officer Hickey and the money donated to their cause will go towards providing bullet proof vests for other K-9’s.
