When we think of a super sniffer in the police K-9 unit, we usually think of German Shepherds, or a large breed of dog. They are the ones most capture on video and images and seem to have what it takes to be a police dog.
This is the worldwide norm we are used to. However, out in Russia, there is one four-legged friend that seems to have broken the assumptions of what a police dog should look like. This small, fiery canine has defied the norms. Redhead is a Welsh Corgi who has a particularly powerful nose.
This doting dog belongs to dog mom Olga Chumarova. Olga initially got Redhead for her daughter when she soon came to realize what exceptions sniffing skills Redhead has.
She volunteered Redhead for a job at the police force where Olga works, and that is where his seven-year long career began. Redhead was officially part of the Nizhny Novgorod police force. He was trained to detect certain drugs and to detect offenders at various bus stops and train stations.
He worked side by side with other K-9 unit dogs and helped keep Russia a safer place. His size was a limitation in terms of speed and chase, but it was also an advantage and he could get to places that the larger breeds could not reach.
Redhead served as one of the best sniffers on the unit and proved to everybody that size is not always the determining factor in success. This, now retired, superstar even became a local celebrity because of his skills.
