Sago Palm Houseplant Kills Dog In Wisconsin

Some of us are pet people. Some of us are plant people. Then you get those of us who are pet people and plant people. Planting can be wonderfully relaxing and having our precious pooch at the side of our hobbies is the ideal picture for many of us.

Plants are often bought for the way they look. When we see a plant that would be the perfect addition to a room and has a unique look, we might find ourselves buying it without researching information on it first. This might be an important thing to do when we have other four-legged family members trotting about in the house, as you never are quite sure what effects could be had. One dog mom in Wisconsin was at the dark end of this spectrum when she lost her beloved French bulldog to a toxic Sago houseplant.

One recent afternoon, Lily the Frenchie got into a houseplant she had spotted. After a while, the toxins of the plant entered Lily’s system and within hours she was fighting for her life. Lily’s mom rushed her to the vet, and she got fitted with a feeding tube. She was in good enough shape to be tube fed at home, but unfortunately, she did not make it.

Lily’s mom stated, “Lily passed away in our arms. She fought hard, loved hard, and gave us a couple butt wiggles just before she just couldn’t fight any longer. We loved her so very much and gave her all the love and care in the weeks since the incident we could possibly give. We are truly devastated.”

The toxic Sago houseplant has a toxin that causes liver failure in dogs. Unbeknown to Lily’s mom, she left the plant in reach without realizing the dangers of it. Lily’s mom has voiced a message to all of us to please do research on our plants if we have pooches in the house.
