The deadly shooting in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017, left our nation, and that city stunned. Lutheran Church Charities sent nineteen trained comfort dogs (all golden retrievers) to help the victims and their families through this troubling time.
Casino workers, hospital staff, the 911 dispatchers, and others need some comforting too – and the dogs have that in ample supply! All of the dogs and their handlers are from the Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dogs unit and have responded other disasters around the country.
The dog handlers would listen to the people, and their stories and the dogs responded by resting their heads on the person’s lap. There is something comforting about stroking a dog’s head. Each night, the dog’s get a massage from their handlers. The dogs do need some comfort too after being around all the emotional stress during the day. The dogs also take frequent breaks to play and unwind during the day.
