Senior Pup Lives Life To The Fullest Thanks To This Loving Family

What kinds of things do normal nine-year-old children do? Watch TV, play games, and hang out with friends – right?

Every once and a while we hear about an extraordinary nine-year-old that does something that we would not expect. Raven is one of those special nine-year-old kids. Raven wanted a dog, but not just any dog. Raven told her mother, Melissa, that she wanted a dog that no one else wanted, a senior dog. She didn’t want a cute adorable puppy. Melissa explained to Raven that an older dog may only be with them a short time.

Raven wasn’t worried about that, she wanted an older dog because she didn’t want the dog to have to die alone in a shelter. Melissa took Raven to BARC’s Animal Shelter, located in Baltimore to look for a dog. They found Kaylee, the oldest dog in residence. Kaylee is an 11-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier who had been living at the shelter for three weeks. Kaylee has early kidney disease, a torn CCL, and a urinary tract infection.

When they first met, Kaylee leaned up close against both Melissa and Raven – the three clicked. They filled out all the paperwork and took Kaylee home! Two weeks later, they found out that Raven had metastatic thyroid carcinoma and only had a couple months to live. Kaylee has outlived that prognosis and has been living life to the fullest! She hasn’t beaten cancer, but she is alive and happy! Read the essay that Melissa wrote to the Petco Foundation Holiday Wishes Campaign here.
