When 10-year-old Astrid was surrendered to the Animal Haven shelter in New York City, staff were shocked at her condition.
The Maltese mix pup had severely matted fur completely caked in waste and filth, and her nails couldn’t even force their way through the dirt and grime on her paws, making it a struggle for her to walk.

The person who surrendered Astrid appeared to be homeless and looked in just as bad a state as Astrid, and they didn’t have many answers from the man, so staff quickly accepted her. She was very confused and spun around in circles, and staff had suspicions that she had been kept confined for many months or even years.

Astrid was taken to a vet, then bathed and her matted fur removed. Soon, she was clean and dressed in a warm, cozy jacket. Mindy Liu, a volunteer with the shelter, felt in her heart that if Astrid could be taken to a proper home even for a short while, she would slowly begin to feel more safe.

Although she already had three rescue dogs and that Astrid was a senior pup with a lot of needs, Liu decided to take her in and foster her. From Astrid’s behavior, it is clear that the pup isn’t very used to being on the receiving end of any affection, and she holds herself awkwardly when carried. Although Liu knows Astrid will take some time to open up and that the road won’t be easy, she is dedicated to ensuring Astrid is safe and has all the help she needs until she is ready to be adopted.

Astrid has now been living with her three new foster pup siblings and often goes on stroller rides with them. Walks are still tricky for her as her leg muscles are weak, making it difficult for her to hold herself up.

With that being said, she is gradually coming out of her shell, and taking her time to get to know her surroundings and her foster family. Despite her timidness, she isn’t frightened, and she appreciates a good soft surface to rest on.

We wish her the best in her recovery!
