Hearing about something and seeing it happen firsthand are two different experiences. If you’ve seen a neglected dog before, you can’t help but imagine why anyone would be so cruel to do that. Unfortunately, these things happen way too often.
A Shih Tzu at the Tri-County Animal Rescue in Boca Raton, Florida, was dropped off at the shelter after being neglected and tormented for years. The drop-off was made in an inhumane way – someone tossed her over the shelter’s fence in the middle of the night.
The little dog, later named Parker, was taken in by the shelter’s staff, who didn’t even know there was a cute dog under the matted fur. “Her hair was cemented to her skin, her nails so long they were wrapped around her paws and wounds so old they were filled with maggots. The smell is something I will never forget,” the rescue said on their Facebook page.
The shelter’s veterinary staff started working on her immediately after they brought her in. After two hours of shaving by five staff members and several buzzers, they were able to shave her matted fur. The poor pup had some open sores, which they also had to treat.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation in her case, hoping to find whoever dumped her that night. Parker is still on her road to recovery, but she’s feeling much better now. The rescue said she would be up for adoption by September.
