When a dog with fur so matted that his breed was completely indistinguishable was rescued by officers, he was rushed by officers to San Antonio Animal Care Services. A medical team sedated the pup and quickly went to work, cutting away matted fur until they had shaved off 6 pounds’ worth of fur.
Beneath the mangy, messy fuzz was an 8-year-old cocker spaniel pup. The organization posted a picture of the pup on Facebook, and Rebecca Payne, who works with the Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Austin and San Antonio, came across it.

She knew she her rescue group had to help the pup, who was in the worst condition she had ever seen on any dog.

Payne picked the cocker spaniel up, and he was later named Hamish. Hamish was so skinny that all his bones stuck out, and his nails were extremely long while his teeth – due to lack of eating – were in decay.

It’s believed that Hamish’s mats had been so bad that his mouth had been tangled shut.

Hamish had to undergo dental surgery, which left him with only 11 teeth remaining out of the usual 42. Thankfully, he came out alright, and Payne took the pup in to foster him.

Slowly, he began to gain weight, though he still has to bundle up in sweaters to keep warm. He’s become close friends with a foster sibling and is able to see clearly without fur in his eyes, finally!

Despite everything he has been through, Hamish loves exploring and finding new things. He’s showed himself to be extremely loving and sweet, and his tail is always wagging! He’s a friendly and affectionate pup who truly deserves the best forever home.
