Shelter dogs take up a special place in our hearts. We know they come from a range of different backgrounds and often have fallen victim to being mistreated or poor living conditions.
Upon arrival at shelters, the rescue teams often work with these dogs to train them in obedience and work on past traumas to retrain certain behaviors. From time to time there may be a specific furry face that comes in and shows a unique kind of potential that can be used for the greater good. Such is the story of Jax.
Jax was brought into the Camp Mutt training facility after being chosen by the unit. Camp Mutt in Jacksonville offers free services to shelters by taking in new shelter dogs and providing behavioral training. When Jax was being trained, the officials at Camp Mutt realized he has a special talent rarely seen in shelter dogs.
Jax seemed to have character traits aligned with the greater good. The trainers at Camp Mutt reached out to Sargent Jauernik at the Onslow Country Sheriff’s office, who then contacted the Gaston Police Department. After assessment and inspection, the police department decided Jax would be the perfect fit for the K-9 narcotics unit. Jax has been trained and was ready for duty within a month.
The story of Jax is so inspiring, and a reminder that despite the background a four-legged friend has come from, the potential within them is always there. Jax saves the lives of many and shall be a cherished contribution to society forever!
