Shenzhen Announced That All Dogs Must Be Microchipped By 2020

The ever-growing pet population is becoming a global concern! Hundreds of thousands of dogs are not neutered or spayed, and we know that when a female dog is on heat she draws the attraction of surrounding male dogs.

This often leads to unplanned pregnancies and litters of puppies that cannot be cared for. They ultimately end up in a shelter or even on the streets. Thankfully, one Chinese government has taken a step in the right direction to control the situation. In Shenzhen, China, the government has instructed that all dogs are to be chipped by the end of this year.

Chipping is a process done by a vet, where an electronic chip (the size of a grain of rice) is implanted through an injection into a dog. It is a painless process and not harmful in any way. The chip contains information about the dog, and by doing this, if the dog is lost there is information to find the pet parents. We all know how easily a dog tag can come off when our canine companions indulge in rough play, so chipping is an easy and successful way in overcoming the challenge.

In addition to this, when a dog is suspected to be stolen, authorities can check to see if the furry face is with its rightful family. In the past week, the Shenzhen authorities have begun setting up mobile chipping stations and clinic for easy access to this service. The chip lasts for up to 15 years and is a wonderful initiative!
