Burping is a sign of having a great meal, and in many countries it’s considered a compliment.
This beautiful English cream golden retriever looks like he really enjoyed his meal! His family says, “Our dog always seems to come over to us after eating a meal to say “thank you”. Then he almost always lets out a big burp.” But what makes dogs burp, anyway?
Well, according to Petful, “Essentially, burping is caused by having too much air in the stomach. When you hear that little burp, you know that air is escaping from the esophagus. Most dogs get extra air in their tummy from eating or drinking too fast. They tend to gulp their food down as quickly as they can.” While a burp here and there may be cute, this can be dangerous for dogs that are prone to bloat – these are typically large breed, deep-chested dogs like Akitas, Boxers, Bassett Hounds, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Gordon Setters, Irish Setters, Weimaraners, and St. Bernards. Other breeds can be affected too though, so when it doubt, check with your vet. Lucky for this beautiful golden, he isn’t prone to bloat, but if you think your dog might be it’s a good idea to check with your vet as it can be potentially dangerous.
As with many things, prevention is the best medicine and luckily in this case, prevention is fairly simple. Continue to page 2 for info on what you can do to prevent bloat and see the video of the golden burping!

While it’s easy to decide your dog should eat slower, the challenge can be getting them to actually slow down. Have you ever tried just telling a dog to eat slower? Yeah. That’s not happening. That’s why several companies have come up with bowls specifically designed to slow your dog down when they eat. If you think your fur kid is eating too fast, it doesn’t hurt to try one of these bowls out. You can get one from Amazon for around $10.
It’s also a good idea to feed your dog 2-3 times a day instead of just once a day, especially large breed dogs. If you check with your vet, they can make other recommendations as well.
