Someone Suggested This Pup Be Put Down Because She was Too Chubby. Look At Her Now!

This is Honey’s story. Honey, a seven-year-old beagle, was surrendered at the Niagara SPCA last summer. She was so overweight that she wasn’t able to walk on her own.

The people who dropped Honey off had wanted her to be euthanized. The shelter workers disagreed, and Honey was fostered by Sue Cable. Cable set out to help Honey shed those extra pounds. A veterinarian determined that Honey had a thyroid problem, which could explain some of her weight problems, but that wasn’t the whole story.

Once on thyroid medication, Honey lost five pounds. Honey’s owner was an elderly person who was believed to have dementia. The woman had a hard time remembering if she had fed Honey or not, so Honey was given way too much food. The person who dropped Honey at the shelter was assumed to be a relative of Honey’s mom. Because of all the extra food, Honey gained excessive weight. She tipped the scales at 68 pounds.

Cable, with the help of a veterinarian, put Honey on an exercise and diet routine. They wanted to get Honey to a healthier weight – which is about 20 pounds for a beagle. Honey’s exercise routine started with a shallow pool. The pool helped get the stress of her joints and helped get her moving again (with less effort). As time went on, the pounds fell off! Cable kept working with Honey, and they increased the exercise time and activities.
