As soon as summer gets closer, roadtrips begin all over the country. Naturally, you’d always want to take your furry friend with you – but leaving them in a hot car, even just to go over to the shop, is a massive no.
The closed off car creates a greenhouse effect, which means that inside the temperature is way hotter than outside. Sometimes even twice as hot!
A lot of states have introduced legislation to outlaw this. So if you leave your dog in your car on a hot day, this may well be a crime!
Hopefully, with the rise in temperatures will come a rise in awareness as well and less people will leave their pets trapped. We can only hope that more comprehensive and complete legislation will be introduced as well.
But until then, what do you do if you see a pet trapped in a hot car, visibly suffering? Well, some brave souls often risk personal injury and even prosecution by breaking the car window to save the poor animal. Some states have even passed laws to protect the rights of those people. However, how can you help if that’s not your preferred way to solve the problem?
The best way is to make all reasonable efforts to contact the owner and, if that fails, call law enforcement on a non-emergency number.
Make sure to share this article and raise awareness. And remember, if you think the weather’s too hot for Fido, just leave him home – it’ll be much better for his health!
