As COVID-19 changes the world, so too do we have to adapt and change our lifestyles. While some of us have fortunately been allowed to return to work, there are others whose livelihoods are under threat, as they have to remain at home and are not allowed to practice their trade.
This unfortunate event has forced us to undertake tasks we would never have considered doing before. Tasks such as grooming our beloved dogs. Oh, how easy it was to just drop your disheveled dog at the doggy parlor and return a few hours later and find a vision of furry perfection waiting impatiently for you! Easier said than done. Pet-groomers deserve a lot more recognition. While it may seem easy to keep a dog clean, especially if he is an indoor pet, there are a few important guidelines to follow:
- Remember it is important not to over-wash your dog. Valuable oils that protect skin and coat may be washed away, leading to dryness and irritation such as eczema
- Brushing is important, but not too vigorously. This will stimulate oil-production and reduce discomfort caused by matted fur
- Use a mild shampoo, preferably one with minimal or no irritants
- Make sure that you dry him thoroughly after his bath. This will eliminate possible fungus growth while protecting the inside of your house at the same time!
- While it might be tempting to shave your dog’s fur, rather do not attempt this at home. Painful nicks should be avoided at all costs.
- Trimming of toenails is a rather risky area as nothing is more painful than a nail that is cut to the quick. Rather leave this to the experts
As life slowly returns to normal, that visit to the doggy-parlor will soon be scheduled and the experts will be able to “correct” our attempts. Remember a healthy dog is a happy dog, so focus on that!
