Many of us dog moms and dads love having our canine companions in the room with us when we sleep. For some of us, we find a type of comfort, for others having a dog there brings on a sense of safety.
Many scientists and researchers have delved into what sleeping with a dog in the room can mean to some of us, and whether there are benefits to our psyche. Researchers at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, were the group to conduct a study investigating the effects of having a dog in the bed. The group studied almost a thousand women and their pet sleeping habits.
They found that 55% of the women had a minimum of one dog sleeping in their beds with them, 31% shared their sleeping space with a cat, and 57% shared it with a human partner. The researchers then investigated the effects this had on dogs and the women in the bed. Amazingly, the dogs who slept in the bed with women felt closer to their pet moms and had a strong bond with them.
The results also showed that women sleeping with a dog in their beds went to bed earlier and woke up with less disruption throughout the night. This suggests that the company of a dog in the bed has a positive effect on better sleep for ladies! Although this is only one study, the results are promising and may just give us more reason to let our devoted dogs sleep at our sides!
