Narcolepsy In Dogs: Meet Rusty

Meet Rusty, the narcoleptic red dachshund.

Narcoleptic episodes in dogs are actually fairly common and can range anywhere from several seconds to 3o minutes. Sometimes narcolepsy is a sign of a bigger health issue and sometimes there are no underlying causes – it’s simply hereditary – especially in Dachshunds, Labrador Retrievers, Poodles, and Doberman Pinschers. Your veterinarian can conduct tests and determine the best course of action and check to see if there are any major health issues that could be causing it but the good news is narcolepsy on its own is not fatal.

The episodes, themselves are more likely to occur when the dog is in an excited state. This typically includes playing, eating, or generally being excited.
