Since February 2013, Izzy the therapy dog has been working at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta facility. One of her first ever patients was Michael, who has cystic fibrosis. They quickly formed a close bond. Michael gave Izzy gifts, and Izzy always came right up to him when she saw him.
Then, one day, Izzy was acting strange. She kept pushing at Michael and putting her paw on his stomach. Doctors realized she might be trying to tell them something, so they ran some tests and found out that Michael had a gallbladder issue. Izzy had likely saved his life! As you can imagine, this brought them even closer together.
Now, Izzy continues to work at the facility. She and 16 other dogs bring motivation, compassion, and relaxation to their young patients. Sometimes, they’re rewarded for their work with spa days and parties! But, more than any of that, Izzy wants to be there for those who need her and to help them heal and recover.
