Despite the saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” you can absolutely train your pup at any age, should they show the capacity and willingness to learn!
Some folks, however, take this training a little more seriously, and start vetting their pups at an incredibly young age. These pups who get through the vetting process often end up being trained for medical care or as a service pup!
4-month-old Louis the Labrador Retriever is a young puppy who is being trained as a medical detection pup. An incredibly important job, since this involves saving and protecting someone’s life by sniffing out diseases!
There are several things in Louis’s favor that make him the perfect candidate. For one, he hails from a working breed, so working and constantly doing something is in his blood! On top of that, he is incredibly active, a trait that can be harnessed. And, most importantly, he has a talent for sniffing out diseases!
