All dogs have wild roots – meaning they are all descendants of wolves. The way wolves communicate with each other is by howling.

A wolf will howl when they are lost, when they are trying to send messages, or when they are trying to find a lost pack member. A howl can be heard from a long distance in the wild. Domesticated dogs howl too – but maybe for different reasons. Some dogs will howl when they hear a siren or a musical instrument.

The theory is that those sounds are at the right pitch to tickle something in your dog’s brain and causes them to howl back! Sometimes, if you howl, your dog may howl right along with you! In this video, a German Shepherd is watching television when the dog on the screen begins to howl. As you probably will guess, the shepherd is howling back! His howl is rather mournful, don’t you think?
