Did you ever wonder why dogs like to chew so much? The bones they love so much have little in the way of taste or nutrition, but they will spend hours gnawing at them!
It has to do with their ancestors, who would have to chew on bones of their prey to get to the rich bone marrow hidden inside. Bone marrow is primarily fat, which all animals needed in their diet as the meat from the animals the consumed was rather lean. So, today, domesticated dogs chew bones.
One benefit of them chewing on bones is that it helps to clean their teeth! In this video, we see a very relaxed Dachshund puppy, Maureen, chewing on something and thoroughly enjoying herself! If you do want to give your dog a real bone to chew on, try to get a raw one that way the fat hasn’t been melted out of it! Cooked bones also tend to be more brittle and may leave splinters.
