Babies have a natural sucking reflex, it helps calm and soothes them. So, they will suck their thumbs at different times of day, like when they get tired and are ready to go to sleep.
Children are not the only ones who have a natural rooting instinct, puppies and kittens do too. They use that instinct to nurse from their mothers. Once they get older, we don’t see many dogs that continue rooting. In this video, Nina, the black Labrador does have that sucking reflex still, and it is rather adorable.
It is time for a nap, and the sleepy Nina is sucking on her toy, Pepa the pig! A human child that sucks their thumb after the age of five may need to be treated to help them stop. But a dog sucking on a toy to get to sleep is adorable at any age!
