There’s some sad news in the pup world. A 3 year old Border Collie pup passed on after ingesting water hemlock at the Horsetooth Reservoir in Colorado. The fur ball had chewed on the plant and died while being rushed to the hospital.
Water hemlock is incredibly toxic to pups. Although it isn’t naturally appealing to them, the ingestion of a leaf or two of this plant can be fatal within two hours, even for large pups. As such, it’s important to be able to identify it. The plant can grow to be anywhere from 3-6 feet long and has leaves with serrated edges. During the summer months, they grow small white flowers.
Within minutes of ingesting water hemlock, a pup may begin to experience seizures, drooling, and muscle spasms, followed by convulsions and then respiratory failure. Recovery may be possible if only a small dose has been eaten, but even so, pup survivors will often face heart and skeletal muscle damage. If you think your pup has chewed water hemlock, work fast! Call a veterinarian and try to induce vomiting immediately. Do share this to alert other pup mommies and daddies.
