When Cristine Sardella went to the hospital for her appointment, a certain furball caught her eye. It was a sad, forlorn looking stray pup sitting in front of the hospital door.
While strays had never exactly been an uncommon sight in Brazil, something about the way this one behaved struck Cristine. The pup was polite and tame, often standing to allow others to pass before settling down again. It was as though it had been trained. Curious, Cristine asked the receptionist about the dog, and she learned a saddening truth.
The poor pup’s Dad, a homeless man, had been brought in to the hospital after being stabbed while in a park nearby. The pup followed the emergency responders and watched as he was wheeled in, then waited outside for him to return. But the man passed away, and the pup, not knowing or understanding what happened continues to wait – looking saddened, but hopeful, with every passing moment, for four entire months.
Christine, who has two pups herself, posted about the dog on social media to see if anyone could help him. A local rescue arrived to pick him up, but the pup escaped and fled, running 3 kilometers across the city and eventually making his way back to the hospital again.
For now, it seems that the pup feels like he needs to be where the hospital is, and he may become depressed if he is not able to be there. In the meantime, hospital staff have been feeding him and providing him with water to earn his trust, and one staff member has plans to adopt the pup when he is ready to move on.
This heart-wrenching tale of loyalty and love might just bring tears to your eyes. The pup’s neverending, unconditional love for his Dad remains as he carries on his vigil.
