If you have ever trained your dog to do something more than to sit and lay down (and even if that is all you have trained your dog to do), you know that it takes patience and time.
Some dogs are motivated by food, others are motivated by praise. But, once you find out what motivates your dog, training may be a little easier. The key is to be consistent with your expectations and praise. One of the hardest things to do is to put a tempting treat down in front of your dog and tell them that they cannot have it.
Dogs have an incredible sense of smell, and it may seem a little like torture to put a treat near them that they can’t have! But once they realize that they just have to wait and they will eventually get the treat, things fall into place. Watch this video, where a German Shepherd is tempted by a yummy piece of cake!
