Top 5 Dog Training Tips You Have To Keep In Mind - Part 1

Naturally, as a pup parent, you’ll want to train your fur ball. Not only will this help keep them safe and obedient (mostly!), it is also great bonding for you and your pup.

Here are five tips to train a pup well!

1. Don’t reinforce the bad stuff. So your pup has some behaviors that you really want to change. But it’s actually likely that he’s learned these behaviors because you’ve reinforced them in the past. For example, a pup might bark at you to ask you to throw a toy, meaning he now knows that barking will get him what he wants. So learn to say “no” when he shows this negative behavior, ignoring it until he stops, or give him a command to follow before you go along with what he wants.

2. Be specific. You can say “no” to your fur ball as much as you like, but to him, it could just mean stop jumping on people he meets from the left and start doing it from another direction. Pups aren’t known to be good at generalizing, so replace no with a command like “sit” or “stay” for better results.

3. Be consistent. If there’s more than one person living in the house, get all of them up to speed with your fur ball’s training. It’ll just be confusing for a pup if you don’t let him beg for food at the table but another person is obliging and sneaking him bits from a plate.

4. Pay attention to your pup. If you fur ball appears uncomfortable with something that isn’t necessary for his health, respect that and let it go. For instance, if he doesn’t seem to want to say hi to another pup, don’t force him to. Respect your fur ball’s feelings!

5. Don’t expect too much. It’s unrealistic to expect a pup’s behavior to change too quickly. It will take lots of time, especially if they’ve gone on a long time getting away with it. Of course, it’s never too late to change, and old pups can learn new tricks! But make sure your expectations are realistic.
