Two Dog Food Products Have Been Recalled Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

You should always be careful with the food you buy for your pup – bad or out of date food is just as bad for animals as it is for people!

Two pet products have been recalled over the last week because of a possible Salmonella contamination. If you have bought any of these products, do not feed them to your pet and return them to the store (if unopened) straightaway.

The first one is “Beefy Munchies”, sold by Smokehouse Pet Products. Through sampling, the Colorado Department of Agriculture discovered dangerous bacteria in two packages of the product, so the company is now recalling it nationwide. This lot’s best used by date is 10/25/19. While there have been no illnesses associated with this product, it’s still considered dangerous.

The second product is the Raws for Paws Turkey Pet Food, distributed mainly in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. This goes for both the Combo Packs and the Turkey Pet Food cases. Two children in Minnesota have been diagnosed with Salmonella-related infections after pets in their homes were fed this food.

Contaminated food is dangerous for pets and people alike. Watch out for the tell-tale Salmonella signs in pets: bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting and lethargy are most common. Some pets can also carry the bacteria without any symptoms and still pass it on to people and other pets. People can easily get infected by interacting with infected pets or handling contaminated food. If you have any suspicions your pet has Salmonella, make sure to see your vet!
