Vet Is Warning All Dog Parents About New Toxin That's Deadly To Dogs

After a little time playing in the nearby woody area, Raider came home to his parent Lyndy Welk and she instantly noticed that something was off about her dog.

Episodes of vomiting and a staggering walk sounded alarms and she immediately contacted the Donner Truckee Veterinary Hospital. Over the phone call, she was informed that her dog was most likely poisoned and needed to be taken to the hospital promptly.

In a short amount of time, Raider was under the saving hand of the vets. They inserted a tube down his throat to simulate breathing for nearly four hours. According to Dr. Indian Vannini, there had been 5 recent cases similar to Raider’s which had been assumed to be caused by some sort of toxin.

The doctor added that Raider displayed drooling, muscle tremors (sometimes mistaken for seizures), and a short occurrence of respiratory failure. Unsure about the exact cause of these displays, Vannini suggests that it could come from fungi like mushrooms, algae blooms that have contaminated water or hemlock; a poisonous flowering plant. However, Welk had searched her backyard for mushrooms and came up with nothing.

Raider’s stomach content samples are also being evaluated externally to understand the cause of the poisonings, however, all the dog patients have the commonality of dirt in their stomach contents. The role that dirt plays is still unknown. Dr. Vannini stresses the importance of being vigilant over our dogs and reporting any abnormalities as soon as they are detected to help prevent the worst-case scenario.
