A fifth grade girl in Roanoke County, Virginia rescued a beagle from a product testing lab.

Eva Brown has supported a non-profit known as The Beagle Freedom project for months, since learning what they do to save beagles used in laboratory testing country-wide. When her family saw this list of companies who test on animals, they quickly made changes in the brands they buy and set out to find ways to help these beagles in need.

They also applied to become a foster family or adopter for a beagle in need and after a few months, got the call that there was a beagle for them! They quickly opened their home and set to work helping their new beagle get comfortable with home life where she would no longer be hurt.

“It was like ‘oh my gosh,’ we’re finally getting one and I was really excited,” explained Eva. “I wasn’t excited though to lift up her ear and see her number.”

Before getting adopted, the beagle now known as Cate had only been known by a series of letters and numbers tattooed in her ear. As saddening as this reminder is, it fuels Cate’s family to help spread the word about animal testing and makes them push even harder to give Cate the love and security she deserves.

Her family reports at first, she just stayed in her crate staring at the crate wall. She was afraid to come out but with a little patience and love, she is coming around one day at a time.
