Viral Video: Girl Pushes Bear Off Wall To Protect Dogs

Fighting a bear may be one of the most dreaded things a human can experience, but this California teenager did it to save her dogs and came out unscathed.

In a now-viral video, the black bear was in a spat with her dogs and she bravely charged at it, knocking it off the wall and later bringing her dogs to safety.

But how does this happen in the first place? In an interview with the teen, she admits it wasn’t a wise choice and she did what she had to do to keep her dogs safe. Most humans would emerge victorious in a fight with a bear and she was lucky it turned out the way it did. If your dogs face off with a bear, you are better off using bear spray than pushing it with your bare hands.

It seems that lately there are more instances of bears popping up where they should not, particularly in suburban areas. Just a few years ago, a bear rummaged through a trashcan then took a nap in a tree. In the next town over, a man walked right into a 300lb bear while on his cellphone. We’ve got ourselves to blame for these increased sightings.

Overhunting bears have decreased the population of Grizzly bears while other species such as the black bear managed to flourish. In a recent survey, it was estimated that there are more black bears around than there were when European settlers first arrived in North America. Our population has increased drastically, and now we have used land once dominated by wildlife for housing. Now, these homes are even closer to the natural habitat of bears and thus sightings have gone up.

Now, we have to ask ourselves how we will solve this problem. We must have some sort of deterrent in place to keep the bears out. Perhaps we should start with improving garbage disposal since that’s what many species are attracted to. Many bears are waking up from their hibernation on garbage days and will come looking for a snack. Bear proof garbage containers are a great idea, even though it’s expensive. But would you prefer to wrestle a 300lb animal in your yard? Chances are you won’t fare as well as this teen, so remember to keep your garbage secure and your dogs on a leash.
