The two batches of contaminated frozen beef tripe were distributed in Washington, as well as California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont.

The batches that were recalled were:

  • Vital Essentials Frozen Beef Tripe Patties, UPC 33211 00809, Lot # 10930, Best by date 20160210
  • Vital Essentials Frozen Beef Tripe Nibblets UPC 33211 00904, Lot # 10719, Best by date 12022015

The “Best By” date code and lot numbers are located on the back of each package.

During a routine test, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found listeria in the two batches, concluded the Green Bay, Wis.-based company. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The company requests consumers who have purchased the contaminated product to throw away the product and notify the store where they bought it from for a refund. Vital Essential’s recall phone line is 920-370-6542.
