If you weren’t aware already, some working pups were bred to retrievers! Thus, the word “Retriever” in breed names like Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever. These pups were usually medium-sized, energetic, intelligent, and very eager to please!
All these traits happen to lend themselves to a pup that was highly trainable and suitable for many tasks, including retrieving animals without injuring them.
You might think that doesn’t seem like such a big deal. What must be understood is that gently picking up something and keeping it in one’s jaws without harming the creature until it is returned is actually a skill a pup needs to learn. Just try throwing a stick for your pup!
Not all of them will come back to you with it until they realise that if they give you the stick, they get more fun out of it! These Labrador Retrievers don’t need a stick, however. They are perfectly happy to chase after a plastic container thrown into a nearby river!
