Breeding and raising pups can be an incredibly difficult experience, and is without considering all the hard work that goes into screening and selecting pups for breeding! Among other things, the mother must be provided with a safe space for her litter of puppies.
Such a safe space is usually called a whelping box – a box with high sides made comfortable for the mother to lie and rest in. This will be the mother’s bed for the next few weeks, and her puppies’ first home. Thus, it is important that the walls are high enough to prevent them from crawling out by accident, and it is temperature-controlled for the comfort of the mother and her puppies!
You can see that this parent was successful in her breeding efforts with this beautiful German Shepherd. Now with puppies that are a month old, this German Shepherd is enjoying motherhood by playing with them!
