Howling is a way that dogs communicate with each other. Wolves in the wild will howl to let other members of the pack know where they are, and the sound can travel for miles.
Plus, with the exceptional hearing that dogs have, they can pick up sounds that are far off. Domesticated dogs howl for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, they will howl when a musical instrument is played, or they hear sirens. It is thought that the pitch of these sounds tickles something in the dog’s brain and makes them howl back in reply!
The black lab in this video is howling a squeaky rubber chicken toy. It was probably supposed to be a toy for the dog, but all it seems to do is make him howl! The dog may not ever get the enjoyment out of the toy everyone was hoping! He seems genuinely concerned about the chicken!
