Most of caring for a dog is straightforward – feed them appropriate food, give them clean water, and make a comfortable space for them to rest. However, one part of being a dog parent isn’t always straightforward – getting them to take medicine.
Medicines, such as antibiotics and pain relief, can be difficult to give to dogs because they are available in oral tablets or liquid. While your veterinarian can help you administer them when you visit, you may need to continue the treatment at home. If your dog won’t let you give them their medication, here are some tips and tricks you can try:
- Give It In Their Meal: It would be best to confirm whether you should give the medication on an empty stomach or not.
- Disguise It In Something Tasty: You could try hiding the tablet in a single tasty morsel instead of putting the medicine in a whole meal.
- Give It While Giving Treats: Take a handful of treats and give three or four in quick succession, followed by the tablet, then some more treats. Your pup might be so focused on the treats that they don’t even notice the medication.
Giving your dog medicine can be stressful, but the tips above should help. If you are still struggling, speak to your veterinarian as there could be another type of treatment available.
