Have you heard of the “zoomies?” No, we didn’t say “Zombies,” we said “zoomies.”
A zoomie is when your dog gets that crazed look in their eye, bend over as if running, and bounces up and down on their elbows (sticking their butt in the air). They may even – zoom around the room in circles like a kid on a sugar high! There is no need to worry if your dog does this – it is actually quite normal even though you may freak out the first time you see it!
Zoomies are a way your dog can release pent-up energy and professionals call it; frenetic random activity period (or frapping). We like zoomies a little better! There is no cause and dogs of all ages, and all breeds have been known to have the zoomies. Ironically, some high-energy breeds may not ever show signs of frapping! Sometimes a zoomie can come on in anticipation of a favorite game or going outside for a walk, other times there is no apparent reason.
You may notice that after being pent up in the house all day, you walk in the door and it sets your dog to frapping! Just be careful about having objects in their way! Having the zoomies is harmless and nothing to worry about. Just go with the flow! It will be over soon! The issue could be if your dog starts to bite or nip while in that excited state. If so, you stop interacting with them and let the zoomie run its course.
