Did you know that bulldogs were bred to drive cattle to market? They also competed in bull baiting, which is a bloody and terrible sport.
Bulldogs are the descendants of fighting mastiffs, but the bulldog we know and love now only slightly resembles its ancestors. A bulldog may look ferocious, but they are sweet and loving dogs. The bulldogs of today are gentle dogs who love life and children – and will be happy with a nap on the couch after a quick walk!
The United States Marines, Yale, the University of Georgia, and many other schools have the bulldog as their mascot! Bulldogs are wide and muscular and low to the ground, so they have a very distinctive gait! The two bulldogs in this video are enjoying a rousing game of ball. Watch and see if there is a clear winner or if they are just having fun!
