There is nothing sadder then wanting a dog with all your heart, only to find out that you are allergic to them. Some people experience itchy eyes, rashes, or even break out into hives.
A truly terrible experience for any dog lover! But could you get a hypoallergenic dog? Are their dogs out there that will not make you break out in a red rash? The answer lies in the allergens. While no dog can be 100% hypoallergenic, there are some breeds that result in less of a reaction for humans.
Contrary to popular belief, our allergic reactions are not caused by the fur of a canine companion. It is actually a response to the saliva and dander that is causing you to sneeze or has your eyes watering! No need to panic, there are breeds that have less of these allergens that we commonly react to. These breeds are as follows:
- Poodles
- Irish Water Spaniels
- Portuguese Water Dogs
- Kerry Blue Terriers
- Bichon Frise
These among others, tend to have a predictable and non-shedding coat. They produce less dander than other breeds. No dog is completely free of allergens but there are things you can do to lessen the likelihood of having reactions. These include constant cleaning and vacuuming of hair and keeping your dog clean and groomed.
If you are really determined to find yourself a four-legged family member but suffer from allergies, there will be a breed out there that is best suited to you. It is important to do proper research and read up on as many experiences as possible.
