What Should You Do If Water Gets Into Your Dog's Ears?

Water getting into ears is dangerous for both you and your dog. What should you know about it?

They Don’t Always Get It All Out

Thanks to the shape and length of their ear canals, some dogs have a hard time getting water out of their ears. This creates the perfect environment for fungus and bacteria to thrive.

So, What Can I Do?

You can get yourself special dog ear cleaners or wipes that will dry out your dog’s ear canals. Talk to your vet for options!

My Dog Keeps Getting Water In Their Ears!

You can put cotton balls in your dog’s ears before a shower, then remove them when you’re done. This won’t work for swimming, but for baths, it works a treat.

My Dog Keeps Getting Ear Infections Anyway

If your dog still gets ear infections even though they’re avoiding water, you may just need to clean your dog’s ears on the regular. Incorporate it into your dog’s regular grooming schedule, alongside other things like brushing their teeth and fur!

How Do I Do That?

  • First, towel off your dog.
  • Second, apply any ear-cleaning solution you have per its instructions.
  • Third, massage your dog’s ears thoroughly to distribute the solution.
  • Fourth, let your dog shake it all out.
  • Finally, when your dog is done shaking his head, dry out his ears with cotton balls.

Are There Any Homemade Solutions?

You can make your own ear-cleaning solution by mixing equal parts of either hydrogen peroxide, apple cider vinegar, or witch hazel with purified water.
