A dog should always have company throughout the day, so that he doesn’t feel lonely or abandoned.
However, no matter how long we’d like to spend with our friendly furry friend, life gets in the way and we may find ourselves in a position where we’d have to leave our puppy alone for a few hours every day. So how do we introduce this into a dog’s schedule?
First of all, think if you’ve seen your dog suffer from any separation anxiety. This is definitely common in shelter pets. If so, contact your vet for help.
It’s best to start training early, so that your pooch has enough time to adjust to the new routine.
Change your puppy’s sleeping schedule. Instead of lounging in bed, get up a bit earlier every day. Dogs love routines, so they will need some time to get accustomed to the new walking and feeding times.
Lots of dogs see that we sometimes brush our teeth or leave our keys before leaving the house. Do these things but stay home. This will teach your pup that you’re not going anywhere for extended periods of time.
Find proper stimulation. Exercise or mental stimulation will always be good for your pooch, as it means they can sleep until you’re home.
Finally, keep arrivals/departures low key and casual. Also make sure to avoid busy toys. You don’t want either of these to be the focus of the dog’s day.
