What To Do When Your Dog Can’t Stand Your Loved One

You’d think that because your dog and your boyfriend are adorable that there will be no love lost between them. Sadly, it’s not always the case.

So, what should you do if your dog gets full-on territorial around your boyfriend, girlfriend, or spouse? First of all, there are many reasons behind your pet’s behavior. It may be that he/she is overly possessive of you. In this case, you may worry that he/she may never get to warm up. It can also be that your dog sees your loved one as a stranger, a threat to be wary about or feared. Whatever the case, try to figure out why.

You may also need your vet’s help to figure this out and determine what steps to take to manage your dog’s hostility. Growling or highly aggressive behavior is always cause for concern, and in such case, you will need to consult with your behaviorist who can recommend effective interventions such as medication, behavior training, and management techniques.

If your dog is found to be simply not liking your loved one, you can practice positive association. Let your loved one hand toys to your dog, join you during feeding time, or take your dog out for an enjoyable stroll. If your dog has a favorite treat, let your loved one be the only one to give it. This way, your dog associates him/her with food, which is always a positive thing.
