People often think dogs that wear muzzles are aggressive. As a result, muzzles are often viewed as something bad. The truth is that is not always the case. There are several reasons to use muzzles, even for social and well-cultured dogs.
Some of them include:
- Using it as a supervisory tool to prevent the dog from eating something on the ground
- Using it because the law requires certain breeds of dogs to use it.
- Using it because it’s a requirement in certain public places
- Using it to give people some sense of comfort
There are at least two types of muzzles you can get for your dog.
- Basket muzzles: They are made from rubber, silicone, or plastic. They limit how much a dog can open their mouth. It looks like fitting the dog’s snout in a basket. However, if fitted well, it gives room for them to relax and pant.
- Grooming muzzles: They are made with leather, nylon, or mesh. It’s a restrictive option that won’t allow the dog to open their mouth to pant.
It would be best if you took some time to teach your dog how to be comfortable using muzzles. We recommend that you work with basket muzzles because they are less restrictive. You can associate muzzles with something positive such as delicious treats to make them excited about using them.
