When Senior Dog Could No Longer Climb Stairs, Dad Hatched A Plan!

When Spike was adopted by Catherine Morris and her family, he was meant to be a ‘downstairs’ dog. However, the English springer spaniel had other ideas.

Every night at bedtime, he would jump over the stair gate and join Morris’s parents in bed. Daytimes were different; Spike would engage in all manner of energetic activities, running around for hours. However, come bedtime, he would snuggle up in bed with his family.

Spike is now 14 years old and weak after suffering 2 strokes. Sadly, his family had to block him from going up to the bedroom. To prevent Spike from making an attempt to go up the stairs in his weakened state, his family came up with a brilliant idea.

They take it in turns to sleep with him on the pull-out couch. Says Morris:

“This new schedule started while I was away at university, so my parents spent alternate nights downstairs with Spike,” “Since I moved back home, I’ve joined the rotation so all in all we get a bit more sleep between the three of us.”

Spike and his dad have a very special bond. As a loving dad, he chats with Spike, brings him food and water, and makes sure that he takes his medication.

As a family, they love the old boy and are determined to make his final days comfortable and happy.
