Why Does My Dog Stop In Front Of Me During Walks?

There are a few reasons why your well-trained dog comes to a stand-still when he’s walking in front of you and one of the main reasons is the reward. Your dog anticipates a reward in return for being such a good boy during your walk that he stops to get one!

Your dog must be taught to follow your lead instead of you following theirs. You can do this by teaching your dog to walk on a leash and to heel. Use a loose leash so your dog has enough freedom to explore his surroundings in a safe way. Heeling will let you have control when you require it. When walking teach your dog to remain on your side, instead of in front of you.

Don’t forget to teach your dog to slow down or stop when you feel necessary. Designate words to let him understand that when uttered it means that he has to slow down or stop. If your dog continues to turn around and stop before you, try walking next to a wall to give him just enough room to walk, but not to turn around.
