Why Dogs Need To Have Clearly Defined Rules To Feel Safe (Part 1)

What needs to be understood is that as a pack animal, your dog will look to you for reassurance and boundaries. In this way, they are similar to children – they need to have clearly-defined rules in order to feel safe and happy.

It’ll make life easier for you as well, since they learn to respect and obey you!

Time For Some Boundaries

Here are some things you can do in order to be a good owner for your dog:

  1. Be consistent in the application of your rules. Exceptions and inconsistencies can make it harder for your dog to understand boundaries and limits.
  2. Train your dog to understand that it’s you who steps out first. This can potentially save their life, if someone accidentally leaves a door open.
  3. Playtime should always be at your discretion. You should not let your dog bully you into playing games with them. For example, playtime will only commence after they have stopped barking.

This can be difficult to establish, especially with smart dogs who will quickly realize that the same rules won’t apply to other people they meet. You’ll have to make sure all visitors and family members conform to the same reinforcement – which can be a task in and of itself!
