Why Dogs Need To Have Clearly Defined Rules To Feel Safe (Part 2)

Making sure your dogs are happy can be a pretty difficult task in and of itself. As it turns out, just catering to their physical needs is nowhere near enough – you have to make sure that they are cared for emotionally and psychologically as well.

How Can I Do That?

One of the easiest ways to do so is to set boundaries and rules that establish you as the leader of the pack. That way, you can ensure that your dog looks up to you for limits and guidance. Here are a few ways of putting that into action:

  1. Put your dog through obedience training. This not only ensures that your dog understands some commands, but also has respect for you and any orders you issue.
  2. Make sure your dog knows what areas are strictly under your control. Even if your dog is allowed to join you on the couch or in bed, your authority over certain spaces needs to be unquestioned.
  3. Be strict about your dog’s feeding schedule. If they’re supposed to be having lunch at 2pm, make sure it is always at 2pm – no matter how much they beg or plead.

Hopefully, with these tips, your dog will know who’s the boss in the house!
