World's Strongest Woman Stays In Ukraine To Help Injured And Abandoned Pets

The world’s strongest woman, Anna Kurkurina, showed her strength in another way when her beloved country, Ukraine, was attacked by Russia. The athlete and trainer chose to stay behind and care for abandoned and injured dogs and cats.

In an interview with UAnimals, a nonprofit organization, Kurkurina said war reveals whether one is human or not. “For me, my soul is my country, my city Mykolaiv, thousands of animals that live in the city. These animals were abandoned by humans or their owners were killed during the war. I might as well move out. But how to be with my soul?” she said.

Kurkurina has always been an animal lover, even before becoming a powerlifter with multiple champion titles. She once worked at the Nikolaev Zoo, feeding and caring for animals.

One of the dogs Kurkurina rescued was a poor dog named Julia, who sustained burns on her back while escaping her burning home, which the Russian army destroyed. Julia is currently getting treatment and will recover soon.

Kurkurina uses social media to help injured pets find clinics, new homes, and safe passage from the war zone. She also shares stories about other brave people who have stayed back to help cater to homeless pets.
